Medical Laboratory Technologist

Job Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for specimen processing, test performance, test result reporting, and clerical and patient care support services. This role requires a high level of accuracy, precision, and timeliness while ensuring compliance with departmental and regulatory agency standards. The technologist will work across multiple laboratory sections, including processing, phlebotomy, and microbiology setups, depending on laboratory needs. They will operate under the supervision of a Laboratory Supervisor and, in their absence, a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS).

Essential Functions

• Prepare sterile media in various formats for bacterial culture growth, including plates, jars, or test tubes.
• Incubate cultures for specific durations at prescribed temperatures.
• Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains by following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
• Examine and interpret test results to identify abnormalities across various departments such as blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology, toxicology, and urinalysis.
• Maintain detailed records of tests performed and report laboratory test results to appropriate personnel.
• Recognize Quality Control shifts and trends, taking appropriate action when necessary.
• Respond to inquiries concerning age/sex-specific expected, therapeutic, abnormal, and critical values for the departments worked.
• Follow the critical value policy and notify appropriate personnel or medical doctors in a timely manner, including necessary documentation and read-back of results.

Education and Work Experience

• Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology: Required
• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent: Preferred
• Two years of experience as a Medical Technologist in a hospital setting: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications

• Current certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Medical Technologist American Medical Technologists (MT-AMT) certification or equivalent: Required in Oregon

Additional Requirements

At least two years of recent experience in the field, along with a current BLS certification and a current nursing license per the state’s requirements.

Evening shifts may vary, including nights and flexible days, based on department needs.
