Registered Nurse (RN) – Perioperative Nursing

Job Description

The Registered Nurse specializing in perioperative nursing practice is responsible for delivering safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care within the operating room and other areas of perioperative services. This role includes advocating for patients and supervising assigned personnel during the intraoperative surgical experience. The RN will participate in a scheduled on-call rotation for the Surgery Unit.

Essential Job Functions

• Accept responsibility for the direction, control, and planning of nursing activities.
• Make evaluations and decisions based on measurable or verifiable criteria.
• Work independently to implement nursing care plans.
• Ensure patient safety by protecting against injury from external sources, including chemical, electrical, and thermal risks.
• Perform accounting procedures to prevent unintended retention of surgical items.
• Confirm patient procedures are performed on the correct site, side, and level.
• Manage patient specimens in accordance with organizational policies.
• Communicate the patient’s status to relevant parties throughout their care continuum.
• Administer medications safely and accurately.
• Maintain patient wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
• Monitor and maintain the status of various bodily systems and balances.
• Implement interventions to protect against surgical site infections.
• Uphold patient rights, dignity, and privacy at all times.
• Deliver age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care adhering to legal standards.
• Document nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
• Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
• Utilize problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster teamwork.
• Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth through ongoing education.
• Act as a patient advocate while safeguarding confidentiality of health information.
• Participate in required educational programs as relevant to the position.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: Associate of Science in Nursing
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in nursing

Licenses/Certifications

• Required: Current RN license in the State, BLS, ACLS, and PALS Certification, TNCC
• Preferred: CNOR, Peri-op 101, CRASE training (required if assignment extends beyond six months)

Experience

• Preferred: Previous RN circulator experience, Peri-op 101 course, and scrub experience.
