Histology Technician

Position Overview

The Histology Technician is responsible for performing routine and complex histologic procedures, which include processing, embedding, microtomy, and conducting routine and special stains as well as immunohistochemistry. The technician ensures quality control on completed slides, identifies issues that may impact diagnosis and results, records test observations, and documents the maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment. Compliance with established laboratory policies and procedures is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine and complex histological procedures.
• Process specimens, including embedding and microtomy.
• Conduct routine and special stains as well as immunohistochemical analyses.
• Maintain quality control on completed slides and address any diagnostic issues.
• Document maintenance and observations related to laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Adhere to established laboratory policies and procedures.

Shift Details

This position requires working day shifts, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with an occasional weekend requirement and holiday rotation. On-call coverage may be necessary once every two months.

Experience and Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of full-time experience in a histology laboratory.
• Experience with Epic Beaker is required.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Histotechnologist (HT) through the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) is required.
• A Bachelor’s degree in histotechnology, biology, or a related scientific discipline is preferred.
• 5 years of experience with immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special stains is preferred.

Additional Information

This role is based in a teaching hospital that is a Magnet-designated facility and a Level 1 Trauma center. The total number of staffed beds is 865. The typical scrub color for this position is wine, and charting is performed using Epic.
