Job Summary

The Surgical Technician assists the surgical team in preparing for surgical procedures in the operating room. Responsibilities include preparing surgical cases by maintaining a sterile field, retracting and passing instruments, and providing supplies and medications to surgeons during procedures.

Job Requirements

Education and Work Experience

• High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required
• Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience: Preferred
• Scrub technician experience: Preferred
• Operating room experience and/or training course: Preferred

Licenses/Certifications

• Surgery Technician certification: Preferred
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved vendor: Required
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification: Preferred

Essential Functions

• Prepare for each surgical case by accurately checking required supplies and equipment.
• Assemble appropriate supplies and equipment prior to operative procedures.
• Set up operative instrumentation and maintain a sterile field for expedient retrieval and utilization.
• Collect data on assigned surgical cases based on established performance standards of care.
• Clean equipment and facilities as necessary and perform housekeeping duties as requested.
• Transport patients according to unit schedules and priorities.
• Provide clerical duties as required.
• Complete instrument, sponge, needle, and blade counts with the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established standards.
• Label solutions according to established protocols.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
