Job Summary
The Surgical Technician assists the surgical team in preparing for surgical procedures in the operating room. Responsibilities include preparing surgical cases by maintaining a sterile field, retracting and passing instruments, and providing supplies and medications to surgeons during procedures.
Job Requirements
Education and Work Experience
- High School Education/GED or equivalent: Required
- Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience: Preferred
- Scrub technician experience: Preferred
- Operating room experience and/or training course: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications
- Surgery Technician certification: Preferred
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an approved vendor: Required
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification: Preferred
Essential Functions
- Prepare for each surgical case by accurately checking required supplies and equipment.
- Assemble appropriate supplies and equipment prior to operative procedures.
- Set up operative instrumentation and maintain a sterile field for expedient retrieval and utilization.
- Collect data on assigned surgical cases based on established performance standards of care.
- Clean equipment and facilities as necessary and perform housekeeping duties as requested.
- Transport patients according to unit schedules and priorities.
- Provide clerical duties as required.
- Complete instrument, sponge, needle, and blade counts with the Registered Nurse (RN) according to established standards.
- Label solutions according to established protocols.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
