Registered Nurse / Labor and Delivery

Job Description

The Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery will provide specialized care to both low and high-risk pregnant patients through the antepartum period and delivery. This role requires a deep understanding of obstetric care and the ability to manage a variety of patient needs effectively.

Scheduling and Charting Details

• Shift Hours: 3×12 hour shifts, nights from 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM
• Charting: Experience with any electronic charting system is required.
• Weekend Requirement: May work every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
• On-Call Requirement: Variable amount, with a maximum of 24 hours per 6-week schedule block.
• Call Off Policy: The facility is permitted to cancel 1 shift every 2 weeks.
• Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday during a 13-week contract.
• First-Time Travelers: Welcomed.
• Local Candidates: Not accepted; radius rule applies.

Required Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Pending License Accepted: Yes, if the candidate holds a single-state license from a non-compact state. Otherwise, an active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license is required.

Required Clinical Skills

• Experience in High-Risk Antepartum and Labor/Delivery settings.
• Proficient in performing sterile speculum exams, non-stress tests (NST), reflex checks, edema assessments, sterile vaginal exams, and triage of obstetrical patients.
• Strong skills in external and internal fetal monitoring, including recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, and placement and calibration of intrauterine pressure catheters (IUPC).
• Knowledge of administering medications such as antihypertensives, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, Pitocin (oxytocin), prostaglandins, and terbutaline.

Unit Details and Staffing Information

• Patient Ratios: 1:1-2 for laboring patients, 1:3-4 for antepartum patients, 1:3 for triage patients, 2:1 for OBOR patients, and 1:1-2 for OB post-anesthesia care unit patients.
• Team Composition: The unit consists of Clinical Team Leaders (RNs), Registered Nurses, and Nursing Assistants (NAs).
• Unit Overview: The Labor and Delivery unit provides specialized care in a 24-bed environment for patients during the antepartum period through delivery, averaging 250 deliveries and 350 triage visits per month.
