Registered Nurse (RN) – ED Holding Support

This position is an essential role within the Emergency Department (ED) Holding unit, supporting patients awaiting inpatient beds. The Registered Nurse will work in a float pool capacity, engaging with a diverse patient population requiring various medical and surgical interventions.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality nursing care to patients in the ED Holding unit.
• Manage patients with medical/surgical diagnoses and potentially higher acuity (PCU) level needs.
• Perform necessary assessments and interventions, including telemetry monitoring, medication administration, and wound care.
• Collaborate effectively with healthcare teams to ensure continuity of care.
• Float as needed to other areas such as the ED and MedSurg units.
• Participate in handling patient call-offs and additional requests while adhering to departmental protocols.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required.
• Prior traveler experience is mandatory.
• Proficiency in managing MS/Tele cases is essential.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is required.
• Skills in telemetry (both on-unit and remote monitoring), phlebotomy, colostomy care, feeding tube management, and more.

Preferred Skills/Certifications

• NIH Stroke Scale certification.
• Experience with IV insulin protocols and pre/post hemodialysis management.
• Knowledge in trauma management, including spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
• Wound care expertise preferrable.

Work Environment

• Target patient care ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele or 1:4 for PCU level patients.
• Shift availability is primarily nights, with opportunities for 36 or 48 hours per week.
• Weekend shifts are required on an every other weekend basis.
• All contract staff may be assigned to a Storm Team or Hurricane Team and may be required to work during catastrophic events or mass casualty situations.

Orientation and Training

An orientation period of 12 hours will be provided to ensure familiarity with the unit’s processes and protocols.

Dress Code

Navy scrubs will be the required attire during shifts.
