Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Registered Nurse with experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU) settings. The ideal candidate will be proficient in telemetry and possess strong clinical skills, particularly with high-acuity patients. The role operates much like an ICU, requiring efficient management of patient care and the ability to work under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and assess patients with complex needs, including those in respiratory distress and unstable hemodynamics.
• Administer medications, including vasoactive drips, and manage arterial lines.
• Utilize telemetry for continuous patient monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias.
• Respond to rapid response calls and participate in IV insulin protocols.
• Administer blood products and manage central and peripheral lines.
• Provide care for patients pre- and post-operatively across various surgical specialties.
• Ensure compliance with isolation precautions and other safety protocols.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant nursing experience required.
• Experience with arterial lines, titration of vasoactive drips, telemetry, and conscious sedation is essential.
• Current certifications in ACLS, BCLS, and NIH Stroke Scale are required.
• Strong understanding and experience in managing dysrhythmias and post-operative care.
• Familiarity with equipment such as BIPAP, chest tubes, and bedside telemetry monitors is essential.
• Must successfully pass EKG testing prior to start.

Scheduling Details

• This position offers either 36 or 48 hours per week, with shifts primarily during the night.
• Highly flexible scheduling; block scheduling is not available.
• Every other weekend commitment required.
• Floating to a sister unit may be necessary based on patient care needs.

Patient Population

The patient demographic includes adolescents, adults, and geriatrics with varying conditions, including those requiring post-rapid response intervention, managing withdrawal, GI bleeds, and complications from surgeries.

Special Procedures/Equipment

• Only one pressor drip per patient, with transfers to ICU for additional support.
• Experience with administering common drips such as Cardizem, Nitro, and Levophed required.

Work Environment

The role takes place in a 20-bed ICU stepdown unit with a patient-to-nurse ratio of 1:3-4. A strong emphasis on teamwork and collaborative care is vital to achieving optimal patient outcomes.

Scrubs

Uniforms must be navy, white, or a combination of both.
