Registered Nurse (RN) – MS/Tele Float

Position Overview

This role is located within the ED Holding Support area, where registered nurses provide care for patients in the Emergency Department awaiting inpatient beds. The patient population may include individuals with a wide range of medical and surgical adult diagnoses. Nurses in this position may be required to manage PCU-level patients, take MS/Tele cases, and float to various units including Emergency, MedSurg, and Telemetry as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with medical/surgical diagnoses.
• Monitor telemetry and manage patients with dysrhythmias.
• Administer medications, including blood products, and manage complex care related to renal failure, colostomy care, and feeding tubes.
• Perform phlebotomy and PICC line management.
• Utilize rapid response teams and adhere to isolation precautions.
• Provide non-invasive airway management and care for chest tubes and CPAP/BiPAP.
• Conduct assessments and interpretations of ABGs and other diagnostic measures.
• Participate in a storm team or hurricane team, reporting for duty during catastrophic events or disasters.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required.
• Traveler experience is required; local candidates accepted.
• Current certifications: BLS and ACLS.

Preferred Skills and Certifications

• NIHSS certification.
• Experience with IV insulin protocols and pre/post hemodialysis management.
• Proficiency in starting IVs and accessing ports.
• Knowledge of CVA, post-neuro surgery care, and management of spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries.
• Experience with orthopedic trauma and total joint replacements.
• Wound care and management, including wound vacs.

Work Schedule and Expectations

• Shift: Night shifts, 36 or 48-hour workweeks.
• Target patient care ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele and 1:4 for PCU-level patients.
• Weekend work: Required every other weekend.
• RTO (Requests Time Off): Maximum of 7 days allowed.

Unit Information

This is an ED Holding unit where patient care is dynamic, requiring flexibility and adaptability to manage high-acuity patients effectively.

Equipment and Systems

• Standard hospital equipment including cardiac monitors and IV pumps.
• Utilize Pyxis for medication administration, Epic for documentation, and SBAR for communication.

Orientation

A comprehensive 12-hour orientation will be provided to ensure smooth integration into the unit.
