Job Description

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse provides both direct and indirect patient care in an emergency care setting. Responsibilities include demonstrating initiative, flexibility, and professional responsibility with minimal supervision. The ER RN is adept at triaging patients safely, rapidly, and accurately upon their entry into the emergency care system, determining care priorities based on physical and psychosocial needs, and factors influencing patient flow.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, consult with specialists as needed, and adjust nursing care as necessary for optimal patient care.
• Conduct comprehensive head-to-toe assessments on all patients, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general patient population.
• Adequately assess and reassess pain, utilizing appropriate management techniques and educating patients and families about pain management.
• Perform all aspects of patient care in a manner that maximizes patient safety and minimizes medical errors.
• Monitor patients’ hemodynamic status and interpret results accurately.
• Identify and manage dysrhythmias with appropriate interventions.
• Assign accurate triage categories based on clinical judgement.
• Maintain thorough and accurate nursing documentation, including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessments of changes.
• Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity while addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
• Function as a liaison among patients, physicians, administration, and other healthcare providers.
• Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles to provide appropriate age-specific care.
• Formulate teaching plans based on identified learning needs and evaluate the effectiveness of education, involving families as appropriate.
• Maintain current knowledge of medications and their administration based on patient age and clinical condition, following the five medication rights.
• Prepare, hang, monitor, and discontinue IV fluids as necessary.
• Adhere to departmental policies and procedures, including those related to performance improvement, safety, and infection control.
• Ensure a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families according to established standards.
• Actively participate in safety-conscience practices to minimize workplace injuries and illnesses.
• Ensure an adequate stock of supplies and functioning equipment while assisting in cost containment efforts.
• Collaborate with other personnel to achieve departmental goals and foster positive working relationships.
• Assist physicians with procedures in the emergency department.
• Supervise and train new employees and temporary staff as needed, while monitoring the work of others.
• Engage in performance improvement activities to enhance care delivery.
• Pursue professional growth and development through educational programs, literature review, in-service meetings, and workshops.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

• Graduate of an accredited nursing program with at least one year of critical care experience; emergency room experience preferred.
• Current RN license in California.
• Certification in BLS, ACLS, and PALS from the American Heart Association is required.
• Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Basic computer proficiency.
